Australian United Recording Artists

Artist in Profile -  Christian McMahon

Born in the country town of Sale in Victoria with an engineer and piano teacher for parents his musical influence was initially classical. The switch to rock music came about through listening to George Thorogood which opened the doors to other talented guitarists of the late 80’s

So keen and inspired to learn rock guitar he then set about earning the money as a paperboy for two years. Purchasing the first of many guitars; an Ibanez.

Within three years he was beginning to write original tunes and was also entering music competitions. With a liking to the blues and listening to old-school guitarists like Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, & Jimi Hendrix, he performed in a “Battle of the Bands” event with a rendition of Purple Haze in Karratha, Western Australia. Mastering the sweep picking technique at only 16.

Back in Victoria he studied Music theory at Eltham High for 18 months, & then continued with advanced theory and studied for a Certificate in Rock & Jazz Performance at the Greensborough TAFE whilst still experimenting with home recording on 4-track tape recorders for many years.
Devoting time to slide guitar with open tunings he took on mastering the Robert Fripp style with the Guitar teacher David Pittaway from the League of Crafty Guitarists who was taught by Robert Fripp himself.

Christian’s early live scene involved performances mainly with folk and blues. He later invented a new style of Grunge using his acoustic guitar, which then became very popular amongst the local music scene in Melbourne. As a soloist he has been a guest artist in Jam sessions, open mike nights as well as a studio session guitarist when he met up with the AURArecords director Mykl Lozin.

The opportunity to work alongside Mykl was to inspire an original CD project which after five years of writing and rewriting Christian set out to find some of the best blues fusion session players to complete the line up. When AURArecords moved to Queensland Christian chose the award winning Steve Scanlon as his new sound engineer and the band tracks were laid down in Melbourne at the Scanlon studio. Shortly after, Christian then headed to the Gold Coast to lay downs his guitar tracks with his award winning producer Mykl Lozin.

Now signed to AURArecords independent label Christian released his long awaited debut album “Magickal Forest” in 2006.
